Baby Showers in Ireland
If you are thinking of holding a Baby Shower in Ireland you might like to know that you are following a tradition that is deep rooted in the ancient past. It’s nice to feel that when I had my own Baby Shower before little Milo was born that I was following in the footsteps of many Mums-to-be who were just as excited as I was. It’s thought that Baby Showers sprang from giving gifts at the baby’s birth and that the Three Wise Men were following this custom when they brought gifts to the Christ Child . . . although we don’t give Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh nowadays!
These customs have travelled down the centuries from Ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt to the present day. As time went on Baby Showers became a way for expectant Mums to celebrate the imminent arrival of the baby with the women in the community, family and god parents. Mothers could share their experiences, bring gifts, tell stories and this is actually how Baby Showers acquired their name – from “Showering” the Mum-to-be with gifts and favours.
Over time Baby Showers started to be held as more children came into the family. In the early 1900s the Baby Shower for a second baby was known as a Sprinkling! They also changed to allow excited fathers and grand fathers to be invited but Baby Showers in modern times really took on their form after the Second World War. America lead the way and it became fashionable to hold themed Baby Showers with Baby Shower games to play with your friends.
Today Baby Showers in Ireland are becoming a popular way for you to enjoy some special time with your best friends and family. Baby Showers are a time when you are surrounded by love and good wishes, a time for happiness and a time of sharing. Mums-to-be often tell me that their Baby Shower is a great day to look back on. Mine certainly was! But that’s a story to tell another time . . .
