Baby Shower Traditions around the World

A baby shower is the perfect way to surround a mom-to-be with positivity and affection. It is a way to spread joy and well wishes and maybe a give a few gifts that will be sentimental or useful once the baby is born. People of all heritages and ethnic backgrounds celebrate the birth of a new baby in their own unique way.

USA

Most countries in the west take inspiration from the baby showers that happen in the USA. These baby showers usually happen during the 8th month of pregnancy, when the due date is quickly approaching. Most of the party guests are usually female and presents are given to the mom-to-be and the baby. Fun party themes, food and games are organised for the whole group to enjoy.

France

It is bad luck to give the mom-to-be a gift before the baby is born. A baby shower in France does not take place until the baby’s first birthday! Gifts are given to both the baby and the new mom. A french baby shower isn’t an all female gathering like in other places in the west and members of both sexes are in attendance.

Korea

In Korea, friends and family gather to have a ‘doi’. Similar to traditions in France, A ‘doi’ takes place when the baby is one year old. The baby is dressed in traditional garb with coloured belt that symbolises longevity and silk pouch which represents good fortune. Koreans also celebrate the 100 day landmark of the baby by holding a small celebration.

Tibet

In Tibet, baby showers do not take place until 3 or 4 days after the baby is born. A baby shower is called a ‘pang-sai’ which means the ‘cleansing of the baby’.  Friends, family and others give food and clothing as gifts. Practical gifts are common and they also give gifts that symbolise a good life. The most respected person at the ‘pang-sai’ is given the honour of naming the new baby.
